TEACHERS PLUS INSPIRATIONS AND ORIGINS
Inspired by the power of education to change lives, the Polyoak Packaging Group founded Teachers Plus to advance young people through education.

Initially incorporated in the Polyoak Family Educational Foundation Trust, founded in 2009, Teachers Plus was separated into its own entity in 2018. Teachers Plus funded its first student in 2012 as part of the Polyoak Family Educational Foundation’s Teacher Intern Programme.
WHAT IS TEACHERS PLUS?
Teachers Plus is a not-for-profit company and public benefit organisation established in response to the urgent need for systemic solutions to South Africa’s education crisis. It is an initiative of the Polyoak Packaging Group, which firmly believes in the transformative power of education.

Guided by this belief, the Teachers Plus Foundation offers scholarships to talented students from under-resourced communities, enabling them to gain the qualifications, support, and experience they need to become outstanding Mathematics teachers.

Since 2012, our committed team of specialists has been driven by the critical need to improve Mathematics education in South Africa. We have refined and strengthened the Teachers Plus Advancing Professional Teaching (APT) Scholarship programme, with this mission at its heart.

The APT Scholarship model is designed to develop teachers who are competent, confident, and classroom-ready from their very first year of employment. We identify talented individuals from under-resourced communities and support them over five years as they complete a distance-learning Bachelor of Education degree and participate in our specialised Mathematics teacher training programme. Throughout this time, we prepare them to become professional, effective Mathematics teachers.

Our APT Scholarship students receive comprehensive support — financial, academic, and emotional — from our specialist team.

We do not do this work alone. We are proud to partner with leading schools in the Western Cape, where our future teachers are placed in real classrooms to practise teaching, assist with extracurricular activities, and gain first-hand experience of the roles and responsibilities of an educator.

Because Mathematics is a spiral curriculum, learners need high-quality teaching at every stage. For this reason, the APT Scholarship is offered across three different Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree streams:
-
B.Ed. Foundation Phase
-
B.Ed. Intermediate Phase
-
B.Ed. Senior and Further Education and Training Phase
OUR VISION
Every Learner has an outstanding Mathematics teacher.
OUR MISSION BEGINS WITH EDUCATION
Driven by our vision, Teachers Plus aims to advance future teachers by investing in Mathematics education excellence.
